Tesla browser: where it is, how to go full screen, and how to get a long link in without typing it

You are parked, charging for twenty more minutes, and the page you want to read is on your phone. The car has a screen the size of a tablet and a browser, and the browser wants you to type the address with one finger from a reclined seat.

This post covers the Tesla browser: where it is and what it needs, the full-screen button, what it refuses to do while driving, and the fastest way to get a long address from your phone onto the car's screen.

1. Where the Tesla browser is, and what it needs

A man sitting in a parked electric car looking at the large center touchscreen

▲ Parked and charging is when the browser earns its place

Tap the app launcher on the bottom bar of the touchscreen, the icon with the small squares, and find Browser. You can drag it onto the bottom bar so it stays one tap away.

It needs a data connection. Over the car's own cellular connection, the browser works only with Premium Connectivity. On Standard Connectivity it works when the car is on Wi-Fi, and your phone's hotspot counts as Wi-Fi.

The browser is Chromium-based, so most pages look the way they do on a laptop. Sites that need a download, a plug-in or a desktop app are the ones that fail.

2. Full screen, zoom, and a page that keeps closing

Three things people search for right after they find the browser, in that order.

3. What it will not do while driving

What the browser allows in Park and on the move

▲ The screen decides by gear, not by you

In Park the browser is fully usable. Once the car is in Drive, the browser is blocked, and video does not play on the screen at all.

This is a safety rule in the software, and a long line of videos with "while driving" in the title has been chasing ways round it for years. The honest version is simpler: load the page before you leave, or hand the phone to the passenger. The browser is a parked-car tool.

4. Getting a link from your phone to the car

Here is the part that costs the most minutes. The address is on your phone, in a chat or an email, and the car's keyboard is a tablet keyboard you reach for across the console.

The Tesla app does not send web links to the car. Bookmarks help only for sites you have already typed once. Short links help when the site offers one.

Moving a long link from a phone to the car's browser in four digits

▲ Paste on the phone, type four digits on the car

For everything else, ZAGO.TO works in both browsers. Paste the link at zago.to on your phone and get a 4-digit code. In the car, open the browser, go to zago.to, type the four digits, and the link is on the screen, ready to tap.

Four digits are the shortest thing that keyboard will ever ask you for.

Limits, plainly. ZAGO.TO carries text only, up to 10,000 characters, so a file or a video has to be a link to somewhere that hosts it. The text is deleted 1 minute after it is opened, or after 1 minute if nobody opens it, and cannot be opened again, so have the car's browser open before you type the code. Our server can read what passes through, since in-browser encryption is not built yet, so a login or a password still gets typed by hand.

The same keyboard problem shows up on a headset and on a handheld, with slightly different routes: Meta Quest browser and Steam Deck web browser.

A long link that has to survive being read out loud, rather than moved, is a different problem, covered in Sending a long URL to your own phone, unshortened.

5. Common questions

Does it work without Premium Connectivity? On Wi-Fi, yes, including a phone hotspot. Over the car's own cellular data, no.

Can I watch YouTube in it? In Park, yes, and the YouTube app under Theater usually works better. Not while driving.

Why does it keep closing? Memory. The car closes it to keep driving functions responsive. Reopen it from the launcher, and avoid tabs with heavy video.

Is there a faster way to type an address? Voice does not fill the address bar. Bookmarks for sites you repeat, and a 4-digit code at zago.to for a link that is already on your phone.
