What is Pastebin, and what is it used for?

Someone in a forum thread says "post your log on Pastebin", and you have never opened it.
So, what is Pastebin? It is a website where you paste text and get a link back. Anyone with the link can read the text, and it stays up until it expires or you delete it.
1. What does Pastebin actually do?

▲ A long log fits in a link instead of a chat message
Pastebin.com has been around since the early 2000s. The idea is simple: chat boxes and forum posts mangle long text, so you paste it on a page built for text and share only the address.
The page keeps line breaks and spacing exactly as pasted. For code it can add syntax highlighting, colors that make a script easier to read.

▲ Paste, choose who can see it and how long it lasts, share the link
2. What is Pastebin used for?
- Code snippets shared with someone helping you debug
- Error logs and config files that are too long for a chat box
- Game scripts and mod lists passed around in gaming communities
- Plain notes, like a list or a draft, that one person needs to read once
Programmers made it popular, but the website does not care what the text is.
3. Who can see a paste?
When you create a paste, you pick an exposure setting. This is the part to read carefully.

▲ Public pastes can show up in listings and search
Public pastes can appear in Pastebin's recent list and get found by search engines.
Unlisted pastes are hidden from the list, but anyone holding the link can read them. Private pastes need an account.
The expiry is your choice too. Options run from minutes up to never, and there is a burn-after-read setting that removes the paste once it is opened.
Because public pastes are watched by scrapers, people who post passwords or personal data by accident tend to find them copied elsewhere. Treat a paste as public unless you set it otherwise.
4. Where a 1-minute handoff fits instead
Pastebin is good at keeping text reachable by link for hours or months.
Sometimes you need the opposite: moving a paragraph from your laptop to your own phone, right now, and gone a minute later.
That is the job ZAGO.TO does. Paste text and get 4 digits, type them on the other device, and the text appears. It is deleted if nobody opens it within 1 minute, or 1 minute after it is opened.
It has clear limits. You cannot reopen it later, it carries text only up to 10,000 characters and never files, and there is no in-browser encryption yet, so our server can read what you send.
If you want the options side by side, Pastebin alternative compares them by what the paste has to do.
In short
Pastebin is a paste-and-link site for text, mostly used for code and logs. Check the exposure and expiry before you share, and pick a shorter-lived road when the text only needs to cross the desk.
